Summer is a time for fun and adventure! It is also a time to plan what you need in advance when travelling with a baby or toddler. Here are a few tips for you to have an enjoyable and well deserved getaway!
- Be sure to get your child in a good routine for a few weeks before the trip. Take a travel bed/cot with you and use it two nights before your trip at home so your baby can get used to it.
- If travelling by car a longer distance, begin the drive at your baby’s sleep time. Leaving your house at 6:30pm after dinner and right before bedtime is optimal. If travelling with a younger baby, starting your journey first thing in the morning also works well, stopping for feeds (and your lunch!) to break up the drive. Pack a small bag that is easy to get to and has all your essentials!
- If travelling by plane, be sure to call the airline in advance to confirm limitations on carriers and bassinet equipped seats if available. Layer your baby in extra clothes given the cooler temperatures in the airplane. Feed your baby approximately 2 hours in advance of the flight so that at take off your baby is hungry for a feed and the sucking on a bottle or breast will help alleviate pressure in the ear.
When you arrive at your destination, you may need to keep your baby awake a little longer if he/she slept longer during the journey. Follow your normal routine at bedtime as your baby will be able to recognize the same sleep cues. The next morning, put your baby to sleep at the local time.
Most importantly, don’t worry too much if your baby gets totally off schedule. It will take a couple of days when you get home to get back into the groove. Enjoy making memories!!!
