Use these 5 tips to ensure that you and your baby sleeps through the night!

  1. Dark Room: Sleep study after sleep study have shown this to have a profound effect on baby sleep. If you do not have black our curtains, tape garbage bags to your windows!
  2. Ensure room temperature between 20 -22.5 degrees celsius. I have talked to many parents who think having a warmer room is preferred; however, this is not the case. Your baby’s body temperature increases during the night and having a slightly cooler sleeping space makes it more comfortable for your little one to sleep.
  3. Put your baby down awake, but drowsy. Allowing your baby to self sooth teaches him/her how to sleep – hands down, the most important of these five tips!
  4. Use a white noise machine. A white noise machine helps teach your baby to sleep with some noise and not pin drop silence! This is reality – you shouldn’t have to tiptoe around your house after 8pm! Keep the noise machine outside the room. There have been recent studies showing the negative effects on hearing if the device is too loud and too close to the baby’s ears.
  5. Consistent day and bed time routines. Healthy sleep habits and enough food during the day will ensure a restful night sleep. Babies sleep best when they ‘know’ what will come next. Keeping it consistent means less time to regroup after ‘off’ days!

Time Change Tips: Is your Family Ready for Sunday, November 6th?

Some of you will be glad to embrace the fall time change – For the families with kids going to bed at 9 or 9:30pm; you probably  can’t wait! If your kids are going to bed at 7pm or 8pm – well, you are going to want to pay attention to these tips!

Start Early!

Start the preparation a week in advance.  If, for example, your little one goes to bed at 7pm, the week prior you should put your little one to bed 15 minutes later each day until you hit 8pm. When the clocks change, your little one’s body has already begun to adjust to the new time.

Get ready for earlier mornings!

Be prepared. Your little one may be up a little earlier but it is encouraged that you put your baby or toddler down at the normal current nap/bed time. Please note it will be hard to keep them awake at some points in the day– get the music, games and stimulants ready!

32% of toddlers kick up a fuss at bedtime: Does this sound familiar to you?

Does your child outright refuse to sleep? Do you sometimes wonder what ever happened to your sleep loving baby? Well, you’re not alone! Why does this happen? Toddlers are trying to express their distress at having to be away from you during the night and at the same time, are exercising their perceived right to say no to anything and everything! So if your toddler is a part of this 32% …here are some tips for you!

  1. Is your bedtime routine still effective? Most toddlers will do better with a structured routine at this age. Try perhaps to include in your routine something that your toddler looks forward to, such as if your toddler loves a particular toy and wants to take it to bed, make the toy  be a part of the routine. And remember, white noise machines and lullabies may no longer cut it.
  2. Does your child’s bedtime need adjusting? If your child is still taking a nap and it is ending after 4:00pm for example, then this could be contributing to the later sleep times. You can try moving the nap ahead by 15-20 minutes, losing it altogether or waking up your toddler after a 45 minute nap and definitely before 4pm! Use one of these options depending on how badly you think the nap is still needed.
  3. Master excuses sound familiar? Nip this in the bud early! Make a pre-tuck in checklist that both you and your toddler can refer to during the bedtime routine. Some parents find having visual cues for example: bedtime snack, brushing teeth, bedtime story, kiss goodnight to help their toddler know what is expected and coming next.
  4. Check your toddler’s room temperature and surroundings. Use black out curtains to keep the room dark. Your child’s room should be quiet and kept at a temperature that is cool but not cold. Also check your toddler’s pajamas for any annoying tags or itchy material.

My Baby Got Sick – Do I Have to Sleep Teach Again?!

It’s happened to many of us parents. You have it all figured out and then boom, your baby gets sick and the sleep teach guru you were comes to a crashing halt.  Fear not, your baby’s ability to sleep on his or her own does not just go away! Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Evaluate where you are in the sleep teaching process. Have you been training for just one night or one week? If the sickness arises on day 1 or 2 of your sleep teaching process, I would recommend to discontinue the training until your baby is feeling better. If you are at the point where your baby has made loads of progress, then attend to your baby as needed and continue to focus on them falling asleep unassisted.
  2. When your child is sick, consider sleeping with them in their room versus bringing them to yours. Simply putting a mattress on the floor next to the crib will help ease the transition once your baby is feeling healthy again. Being sick does not impede their ability to know how to put themselves to sleep.
  3. Resume your sleep teaching routine when your child is 100% healthy (no fever, vomiting or other signs of illness) for at least 24 hours. Consult your physician for the sleep teaching green light!

A Dream Feed – What EXACTLY is it anyway?

Recently after having a conversation with one of my (awesome!) clients, I realized that many people have very different ideas about what exactly a dream feed is. So I thought, why not make that my next blog!

What is a dream feed?

A true dream feed is when a parent goes to their sleeping baby, picks them up while they are ‘dreaming’, feeds the child and puts them back down asleep. The baby is never actually woken up. If the child wakes up, this is not a dream feed. Dream feeds are used as a way to keep your baby full and avoid feeds before 2am, increasing the likelihood that your baby will sleep till 7am the next morning.

When is it done?

Generally, a dream feed is done between the hours of about 9:30pm – 11:30pm.  In terms of age, I would recommend that you start including a dream feed for your baby at 8 weeks.

What you should consider

Babies that are swaddled generally stay asleep for this feed much better. Dream feeding a baby out of their swaddle is possible, it is just a bit harder to keep them asleep.

Doing the dream feed will also help parents feel assured that they are giving the baby more calories during the day. This can be especially useful for reflux-y babies who generally do better with a dream feed as they can tolerate it without needing to be burped or held upright afterwards. This is because the abdominal muscles are so relaxed at this stage of night (given the release of melatonin,  the hormone that makes the body feel drowsy).

So, a dream feed if done at the right time and the right way, can offer an extra dose of nutrition and can help the baby (and parents) sleep better too!

Older Child Being Woken by Your Baby?

Do you have an older child (or two!) in your house being woken up too early or in the middle of the night by your baby?

Here are some tips to help you.

  1. If your child who is being woken is 3 or older, talk to them. They understand a lot more than we think. Let the older sibling know there will be noises in the night because their baby brother or sister is learning how to sleep and this should not worry them. Talking to them is especially important if they share a room.
  2. If your kids are sleeping in two separate rooms that are close in proximity, use a white noise machine outside the two rooms to drown out the noises in the middle of the night.
  3. If the older child sleeps through the night even with noise or wakings by his/her sibling – give him or her a treat or a special thank you surprise. This will go a long way to making the older sibling feel important too and to acknowledge their efforts in this phase.
  4. Consider a sleep re-arrangement if the sibling is being woken up repeatedly and is losing valuable sleep themselves. Bunking out on a mattress or in a ‘pack and play’ in mom and dad’s room (although not ideal) may be considered as an option for a few weeks to get over this phase.
  5. Don’t give up! Learning to sleep through the night takes time and patience. You got this!

Have late summer nights got you all messed up?

Late summer nights got you and your child sleep deprived?!

Whether it’s multiple night outs or just staying up past the usual bedtime over the summer months, it will catch up – to your kids and to you! I know it has with our family of late! Here are a few ideas to help ease the transition back to a healthy routine.

1. If possible, eat dinner a half hour earlier or half hour later for the next few days. This way your kids can still go outside either right after they are picked up or after dinner time. This helps to get you closer to your normal bedtime. Much of the extended bedtimes are due to kids being outside more and who wants to stop that!?

2. Ensure your child is on board. After dinner / play time, it’s bath time and then bed. Much of the negotiating starts around bath time so be sure to have the rules stated and agreed  to in advance. Get out that timer and use it if time limits on brushing etc. needs to be set. Checklists are great too if visual cues help your child.

3.  Use black out curtains (or garbage bags taped to the windows)! The extended hours of light into the evening motivates our children to stay up way later just ’cause it’s still light out.’ Heard that one before?

4. Don’t forget to make bedtime fun. You’re almost at the end of your day and if you’re like me, a little more crabby too. Engage your children, make reading fun and take the time during the bedtime routine to learn about their day and plan out the next!

Travelling with your baby this summer? READ this first!

Summer is a time for fun and adventure! It is also a time to plan what you need in advance when travelling with a baby or toddler. Here are a few tips for you to have an enjoyable and well deserved getaway!

  1. Be sure to get your child in a good routine for a few weeks before the trip. Take a travel bed/cot with you and use it two nights before your trip at home so your baby can get used to it.
  2. If travelling by car a longer distance, begin the drive at your baby’s sleep time. Leaving your house at 6:30pm after dinner and right before bedtime is optimal.  If travelling with a younger baby, starting your journey first thing in the morning also works well, stopping for feeds (and your lunch!) to break up the drive. Pack a small bag that is easy to get to and has all your essentials!
  3. If travelling by plane, be sure to call the airline in advance to confirm limitations on carriers and bassinet equipped seats if available.  Layer your baby in extra clothes given the cooler temperatures in the airplane. Feed your baby approximately 2 hours in advance of the flight so that at take off your baby is hungry for a feed and the sucking on a bottle or breast will help alleviate pressure in the ear.

When you arrive at your destination, you may need to keep your baby awake a little longer if he/she slept longer during the journey.  Follow your normal routine at bedtime as your baby will be able to recognize the same sleep cues. The next morning, put your baby to sleep at the local time.

Most importantly, don’t worry too much if your baby gets totally off schedule. It will take a couple of days when you get home to get back into the groove. Enjoy making memories!!!
